When ace Bollywood director, Karan Johar, writes a movie, there is always a high level of anticipation attached. After all, he is one of India’s most accomplished and critically acclaimed filmmakers. So, when Johar announced Ae Dil Hai Mushkil (This Heart Is Complicated) in early 2015, there was a surge of excitement. Unlike his previous blockbuster classics, his much-loved pairing of Bollywood actor, Shah Rukh Khan and actress, Kajol, were not the stars of this movie. The storyline was entirely different, in comparison to those traditional family-orientated typical Bollywood movies he is known for. A new concept, a new cast and a new crew; perhaps the freshness of this film adds another blockbuster to Karan Johar’s name.

After several failed attempts, Karan Johar was finally able to cast Aishwarya Rai Bachchan in a movie and that, too, opposite Ranbir Kapoor. Indeed, the star kid is younger than she is but that’s one highlight of the storyline. And Johar could not have made a better choice. Let’s cut to it then…

CAST: Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, Ranbir Kapoor, Anushka Sharma and Fawad Khan in a guest role.

PLOT: Ae Dil Hai Mushkil tells the story of Ayan Sanger (Ranbir Kapoor), a London based lad, who falls hopelessly in love with his new best friend Alizeh Khan (Anushka Sharma). Ayan wishes to be a singer, but his music lacks the lyrical inspiration needed to create an emotional attachment, as Alizeh makes it known to him. Alizeh further adds that Ayan has never experienced true love and heartbreak so he would not realise the power of emotions in his songs. As the days go by, the two bond over their love of Bollywood, parties and a never-to-be-forgotten holiday. However, Ayan soon discovers heartbreak in its purest form and it is in this predicament that he meets a beautiful, middle-aged poet by the name of Saba Taliyar Khan (Aishwarya Rai Bachchan). What unfolds next is the emotional quagmire that is the consequences of unrequited love, which makes Ae Dil Hai Mushkil a movie not to be missed!

OVERVIEW: The movie has all the ingredients of a blockbuster Bollywood movie. Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, Ranbir Kapoor and Anushka Sharma portray their characters effortlessly and effectively. However, Ranbir and Anushka are definitely the stars of this movie. Ranbir Kapoor is undoubtedly a great actor, but Anushka Sharma proves she’s nonetheless. It is a treat to watch Aishwarya Rai Bachchan portray a role that is versatile to even her capabilities. The music is already a hit amongst the audiences, much like all other Karan Johar movies! The fan favourites in this movie include the title song, ‘Bulleya’ and ‘The Breakup Song’, to name a few. Direction, dialogues, cinematography, choreography, and one surprise element also get a two thumbs up!

RATING:  Whether you are a fan or not a fan of Bollywood flicks, Ae Dil Hai Mushkil will definitely give you the Kuch Kuch Hota Hai (Something Happens) feel! Catch it now at a cinema near you. A complete 5 on 5.
